I.V.XII
The manifestation of God is choked by human superstition
As rashness and superficiality are joined to ignorance and darkness, scarcely a single person has ever been found who did not fashion of himself an idol or specter in place of God. Surely, just as waters boil up from a vast, full spring, so does an immense crowd of gods flow forth from the human mind, while each one wrongly invents this or that about God himself. There is no end of the list of superstitions with which the world has been entangled. No mortal ever contrived anything that did not basely corrupt religion. If men were taught only by nature, they would hold to nothing certain or solid or clear-cut, but would be so tied to confused principles as to worship an unknown god (Acts 17:23).
Quote of the Day
No mortal ever contrived anything that did not basely corrupt religion.
My Own Words
I heard a comedian on the radio recently who developed an entire routine around the fact that the Jewish God was angry in the Old Testament and the Christian God in the New Testament was a kinder, gentler version. This is a classic misunderstanding, of course, and not new to our generation, however, it proves the point Uncle John is making about the clear revelation of God choked by human superstition. So that we are not left with our own ideas about God, He has given us His word and faithful preachers so that we do not worship an unknown God.
